Why? Singapore has been synonymous with commerce since its days as a trading post for the British East India Company in the early 19th century. Today, business centres on Raffles Place, a soaring skyline of glass and steel clustered around the mouth of the Singapore River and named, of course, after the island’s colonist, Sir Stamford Raffles.

Holcim (US) Inc. in Ada recently sponsored an essay contest for area eighth grade students in conjunction with the plant’s 100-year anniversary. Students were asked to submit a 1,000-word essay on the past 100 years of cement history. Presentations were made April 15.
