In January 2006, the Chicago Police Department yanked four police bodyguards assigned to then-city Clerk Jim Laski after Laski got caught up in the Hired Truck scandal and the bodyguards reported him AWOL from work. Mayor Daley and then-First Deputy Police Supt. Dana Starks promised a broader review of a perk long viewed as little more than a valet service.
